Martin Greenfield Clothiers makes men's suits, tuxedos, sport coats, trousers and overcoats entirely by hand in our factory at 239 Varet Street in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Every jacket is built with a full canvas, with pockets, armholes and collars sewn by hand, through a process of roughly 108 steps.
We specialize in made-to-order custom clothing for individual clients, and we manufacture for designers, specialty retailers, costume designers and stylists. We are one of the few remaining factories in the United States producing fully hand-tailored suits.
Our history
Martin Greenfield survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald and came to New York in 1947 at age 19. He started as a floor boy at GGG Clothes, in our same location, and rose to Vice President of Production, before buying the factory in 1977.
Over seven decades, Martin dressed Presidents Eisenhower, Ford, Clinton and Obama, along with clients including Paul Newman, Martin Scorsese and Denzel Washington. He died in March 2024 at age 95.
Today
The company is run by Martin's sons, Jay Greenfield and Tod Greenfield as co-Presidents, who joined their father in the 1980s. Martin's grandson David Greenfield joined the company in 2021 to lead the third generation at Martin Greenfield.
We operate as a union shop as part of the Workers United (SEIU), ensuring better pay, pensions, health benefits and working conditions. Our factory has been making clothing by the same process since 1917, and our pattern archive goes back to GGG's founding in the early 1900s.
